2021 Code Change Training
Training Requirements

Training Timeline
DHCD Certificate holders will have 1 year from the official Virginia code adoption date to complete the required code change training modules.
In-Person Training
Live in-person 2021 Code Change Training classes launched in October, 2023 with classes currently scheduled through March, 2024 in various locations throughout the state. Click here to view the live calendar of in-person classes. Click the Log In link at the top of the calendar to page to log into your DHCD account and register for classes. Students must attend the entire day of training to receive credit.
Online Self-Paced Training
2021 Code Change Training will be available in an online self-paced format through the Code Academy Learning Center beginning January, 2024. If you prefer this format, please make sure you can access the Code Academy Learning Center so that you are prepared once courses are live. Code Change Module Tracking – Once a course is completed through the Learning Center, expect the course to appear in your DHCD profile within 2 weeks.

TRAINING PROVIDERS
Although DHCD is the primary provider of code change training in Virginia, the agency partners with several organizations to maximize the availability of Code Change Training to code officials. These approved providers utilize DHCD materials and VBCA-approved instructors. Completion of these offerings is reflected on the JPVBCA Online Registration System once attendance sheets are submitted to the Code Academy. OTHER STATE AGENCY APPROVALS
Besides DHCD, other certifying or licensing entities may require the completion of continuing education or code update training. In cooperation with the Department of Professional Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and with the Department of Fire Programs (VDFP), DHCD courses qualify for continuing education credit training towards journeyman or master license, and 1031 certification, respectively.
DHCD is an approved DPOR provider of continuing education. Students who wish to receive DPOR credit for VBCA classroom classes must provide their complete licensure information, including license number, before the end of each course. VBCA will then forward all data to DPOR for processing. Any questions regarding license renewal should be directed to DPOR.
Certain DHCD programs also qualify for continuing education credit with the VDFP for 1031 credit. Appropriate forms are provided during the designated approved programs and submission of those forms is handled by DHCD. All questions regarding VDFP credit should be directed to VDFP.
